Malaria or typhoid? Why testing beats guessing

Why fever needs a test, not an assumption — and what over-treating does to your body and wallet.

By the TarragonHealth editorial team

Fever is a symptom, not a diagnosis

Most Nigerian adults have treated a fever as malaria without a test at least once. Sometimes it works — malaria is common. But fevers also come from typhoid, viral infections and more, and each needs different treatment.

What guessing costs

Taking antimalarials for a virus wastes money and delays the real answer. Repeated blind antibiotic courses for assumed typhoid quietly build resistance in your own body.

The better habit

A malaria rapid test costs little and answers in minutes. If fever persists beyond two days, worsens, or comes with a stiff neck, confusion or trouble breathing, that is hospital territory — not another course of self-medication.

This article is general health information, not medical advice, a diagnosis, or a treatment plan. Always talk to a doctor about your own situation — and if you feel seriously unwell, go to a hospital now.
