From a number to an actual artery
Excess LDL cholesterol doesn't just float harmlessly in your blood. Over years it can work into the walls of arteries and, alongside inflammation, build into fatty deposits called plaque. A narrowed artery restricts blood flow; a plaque that ruptures can trigger a sudden clot, which is often what a heart attack or stroke actually is, happening inside a vessel.
Why this takes years, not days
This process, atherosclerosis, builds slowly and silently, often over decades, which is exactly why a cholesterol result in your 30s or 40s matters even though nothing feels wrong yet. The earlier it's identified and managed, the more of that decades-long buildup is prevented rather than treated after the fact.
What's genuinely reversible
Plaque that has already hardened doesn't simply disappear, but lowering LDL meaningfully slows or halts further buildup, and there is real evidence that some soft, early plaque can shrink with sustained treatment. The goal is less about erasing the past and more about changing the next twenty years.
The point of treating it early
A heart attack or stroke is often the first noticeable symptom of a process that had been building for years. Managing cholesterol well before that point, through diet, movement, not smoking, and a statin when risk is high enough, is what prevention actually means here: an honest description of the biology, not a scare tactic.
